The bathing water is situated on the north Kent coast adjacent to the town of Westgate-on-Sea. It is a gently shelving sandy beach which is totally tidal. A promenade sits above the beach. There are extensive rock formations just offshore to the east and west which are exposed at low water. West Bay is a beautiful beach located in Thanet, and is considered to be a hidden gem. It offers plenty of sunshine throughout the day, and has a sandy beach that may be covered during high tide, so visitors are advised to check the tide times. The public toilets are basic but well-maintained, and there are bay inspectors and lifeguards for safety. Free parking is available on the road. Compared to other popular bays, West Bay is quieter and less crowded. There is a kiosk that sells teas, coffees, and ices, as well as homemade bread pudding. Further up the promenade, there is a larger cafe that serves cooked meals. The Swan pub with a beer garden can be found on the opposite side of the road. The beach is easily accessible by train from London, and the area offers opportunities for exploration along the Viking Trail.
