Porthcothan Bay is on the north coast of Cornwall. It is a rural, sheltered sandy bay, approximately 400 metres wide, backed by sand dunes. There is a stream that flows across the beach. Porthcothan is popular with tourists and surfers and is patrolled by lifeguards during the day in the summer.

The beach has extensive rocky outcrops with many rock pools exposed at low tide. A large shipwreck can also become exposed on this beach, particularly following storms. There are no streams entering the bathing water directly. The bathing water lies within the Trevose Head and Constantine Bay Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and the Padstow Bay and Surrounds Marine Conservation Zone.
